Despite coming into the season the Ottawa Senators prospect list looked very dull and from 2004 OTHL Draft to 2007 OTHL Draft the Ottawa Senators has had 29 draft picks, which all but only three has made it to the OTHL which the list includes Brandon Dubinsky, Tyler Kennedy, and Ryan Jones. The problem is the Ottawa Senators didn’t reap those rewards and those three current players are on different teams.
Alex Tousignant took over the reigns early in the offseason from long time General Manager Alex Snyder. With the Senators under Tousignant spent time and rebuilt the system from the bottom which then ended up making the Senators into a bottom dweller in the OTHL which ended up costing Tousignant his job. Now with former Canucks GM Neil Burkholder has promised to keep building from his young core and has added some prospect who will crack the Senators top twenty.
Currently the Senators have spent a lot of assets on offense having nine players drafted since 2009 have been first and second round draft picks (6 first rounders). Which makes it no secret that the teams top twenty is filled on offense.

Team: Colorado (WCHA)
Stats: 30GP, 15G-26A-41P, Even, 18PIM
Drafted: 2009: 1st Round, 8th Overall
It was no secret back in the 2009 then Senators GM Alex Snyder didn’t want Jaden, but the owner overruled and took Jaden with the 8th pick. Schwartz lead the team in scoring and showed more development since being drafted in 2009. His passing which is his bread and butter as still continued to grow, and he is starting to develop a decent shot. He should be competing for a roster spot next year with the Senators.
2. LW Chris Kreider (8.0C)
Team: Boston College (H-East)
Stats: 40GP, 20G-21A-41P, Even, 62PIM
Drafted: 2009: 1st Round, 27th Overall

1. C Jaden Schwartz (8.0B)
Team: Colorado (WCHA)
Stats: 30GP, 15G-26A-41P, Even, 18PIM
Drafted: 2009: 1st Round, 8th Overall

2. LW Chris Kreider (8.0C)
Team: Boston College (H-East)
Stats: 40GP, 20G-21A-41P, Even, 62PIM
Drafted: 2009: 1st Round, 27th Overall
Krieder has been very streaky this year at Boston College. Started out very hot out of the gates, and suddenly has cooled down, but has stayed consistent scoring just over a point per game on average. He looks bored out there sometimes, but shows OTHL star flashes at times. He reminds me of a Marian Gaborik style wise, and could be a dark horse player to join the Senators next season.
3. C Ryan Strome (8.0C)
Team: Niagara (OHL)
Stats: 46GP, 30G-38A-68P, +37, 47PIM
Drafted: 2011: 1st Round, 5th Overall
Strome is the current highest drafted player currently in the system for the Senators. The talented center had a rough season for a prospect of his caliber scoring only 68 points. He was a healthy scratch in the beginning of the OHL season due to personal reasons, and in early January he was out indefinitely from a sucker punch from Brody Silk. In the prior 28 games before the injury he scored 40 points (18G-22A). Strome came back and played another 18 games and scored 28 more points. He still has the talents and will most likely return to the OHL for one more year before making the jump to the OTHL.
4. RW Beau Bennett (8.0D)
Team: Denver (WCHA)
Stats: 10GP, 4G-9A-13P, Even, 25PIM
Drafted: 2010: 1st Round, 23rd Overall
Beau Bennett has had some bad luck since being drafted in the first round. Last year he had a knee injury, and this year after playing only playing 10 games this season from a brutal ruptured tendon. Which cost him rest of the season. Missing the rest of the regular season. Bennett has the drive coming out after his knee injury and scored 13 points. His talent is still there but the question needs to be asked if his morale is still high after getting hurt for the second straight year in a row?
5. RW Richard Panik (8.0D)
Team: Norfolk (AHL)
Stats: 54GP, 18G-19A-37P, +12, 52PIM
Drafted: 2009: 2nd Round, 33rd Overall
Panik has had a good rookie season in the AHL. Currently 4th in team scoring for the Norfolk Admirals. He still is getting used to the North American style and it shows this kid has the size, and speed, and the offensive consistency to be a top six forward. He still has some offensive upside and still has a lot to be tapped into. He should be fighting for a roster spot to get to play with the Senators next season.
6. RW Tyler Toffoli (7.5C)
Team: Ottawa (OHL)
Stats: 62GP, 52G-48A-100P, +31, 22PIM
Drafted: 2010: 2nd Round, 38th Overall
Acquired around the deadline for Daniel Alfredsson, and can turn into a major player for the Senators down the road. He lead the OHL in scoring most of the year before being dethroned at the last game of the season. Toffoli can get the puck in the net and some say he could be the best offensive gifted prospect out of the 2010 prospect class. Is one downside is his skating, which has gotten better these past two years. He has all the makings of being a big star in the OTHL.
7. RW Stefan Noesen (7.0C)
Team: Plymouth (OHL)
Stats: 63GP, 38G-44A-82P, +18, 74PIM
Drafted: 2011: 1st Round, 22nd Overall
Noesen was picked up right before the regular season in the Travis Zajac deal with the Dallas Stars. He showed this season he has some offensive pop, and really delivered a better than expect season for the Senators. The power forward is starting to make himself into a all around type of player, and should expect to be a top nine forward in the next few seasons. He is still raw, but given time he will be a good player.
8. LW Phillip Danault (7.0D)
Team: Victoriaville (QMJHL)
Stats: 62GP, 18G-53A-71P, +11, 61PIM
Drafted: 2011: 1st Round, 30th Overall
Danault is one of those players that is high character and has a drive that no one can beat. That being said he worked hard and showed progress of becoming a solid two way player. His goal production dipped but he did play in two less games, and gained four more assist. Danault still needs a few more years of development before coming a OTHL everyday player.
9. C Markus Granlund (7.0D)
Team: Helsinki (SM-Liga)
Stats: 47GP, 15G-19A-34P, +19, 18PIM
Drafted: 2011: 2nd Round, 54th Overall
Granlund has showed some major improvements in his game. He is still a few years out from making the OTHL, but is showing he does have the skill set to make it. Granlund is a skilled play maker, who ran the power play attack in Helsinki, and this kid looks to be the real deal. He does need some time getting adjusted to the North American style, and need to add more bulk.
10. LW Ben Hanowski (7.0D)
Team: St. Cloud State (WCHA)
Stats: 39GP, 23G-20A-43P, 0, 25PIM
Drafted: 2009: 3rd Round, 62nd Overall
Hanowski came along in the trade that sent Brandon Dubinsky off to Pittsburgh along with David Krejci. Hanowski is no doubt a sniper. Since going to St. Cloud Hanowski has shown he can be a playmaker too, but Hanowski still shows his sniping ability. He lead St. Cloud this year in points. He should be making the jump to the OTHL next year after he graduates from St. Cloud State.
11. C Nick Shore (7.0C)
Team: Denver (WCHA)
Stats: 42GP, 13G-28A-41P, Even, 16PIM
Drafted: 2011: 3rd Round, 63rd Overall
Shore is a solid overall player who can do a little bit of everything. He showed this year his tremendous playmaking ability, but his major knock is he doesn’t shoot the puck enough. If he can be a little more selfish it would turn Shore into a potential top six forward. The sophomore doubled his point total, and will return for his junior season, which the Senators are hoping he continues to grow.
12. C Daniel Catenacci (7.0D)
Team: Owen Sound (OHL)
Stats: 67GP, 33G-39A-72P, +11, 114PIM
Drafted: 2011: 3rd Round, 68th Overall
Daniel was picked up by the Senators at the trade deadline from the New Jersey Devils for Chad LaRose. Cantenacci is a compact player who has been consistant scoring over 141 points over the past two seasons. Daniel is a super speedy center, who is high energy. His shot has gotten better, but needs to continue to add more bulk to make it to the OTHL
13. D Troy Rutkowski, (6.5D)
Team: Portland (WHL)
Stats: 72GP, 13G-32A-45P, +18, 37PIM
Drafted: 2010: 4th Round, 99th Overall
Rutkowski was acquired by Burkholder twice this season once when he was with the Vancouver Canucks, and then again when he took over Ottawa. Rutkowski was raw coming into the season but started to come into his own. He’s physical, and a very nice passer, and has a laser for a slap shot. He projects to be a number four defender in the OTHL after a solid 2012 campaign.
14. D Adam Janosik (6.5C)
Team: Gatineau (QMJHL)
Stats: 60GP, 7G-25A-32P, +17, 37PIM
Drafted: 2010: 4th Round, 101st Overall
Like Rutkowski Burkholder acquired twice this season. Janosik is a nice puck moving defenseman, still raw but should turn into a nice PP QB defenseman in the OTHL. His numbers took a slight dip, but as a lot of potential to become a solid OTHL player down the road. He has all the offensive instincts, but his physical size could be a problem.
15. G Adam Wilcox (7.0D)
Team: Tri-City (USHL)
Stats: 37GP, 2068MP, 2.62GAA, 21W-16L-0T, 3SO
Drafted: 2011 Draft: 6th Round, 156th Overall
Wilcox was acquired from the Edmonton Oilers deal for Denis Wideman. Wilcox is currently the only goalie in the Senators system. He played for Green Bay before being traded to Tri-City and caused him to lose a little bit of game. Wilcox loves to challenge shooters, and shows to have some consistency between the pipes. Still raw and has committed to play at University of Minnesota which should show what type of skill Wilcox really has.
16. C Steven Fogarty (7.0D)
Team: Pencticton (BCHL)
Stats: 60GP, 33G-48A-81P, Even, 32PIM
Drafted: 2011: 3rd Round, 84th Overrall
Fogarty is a big hulking center man who is still very raw but shows some major upside. Drafted by the Stars and made the move to the BCHL so he could attend Notre Dame in the 2012-13 season. Which he had a very good rookie season. Scoring a lot and showing he can be a nice two way power forward who still has some upside.
17. C Bill Arnold (6.5C)
Team: Boston College (H-East)
Stats: 38GP, 16G-17A-33P, Even, 42PIM
Drafted: 2010: 4th Round, 96th Overall
Arnold had another nice season at Boston College. Showing off his high motor, and two way ability which lead him 5th in team scoring for the Eagles. Still needs some more seasoning but shows to have promise into turning into a depth center for the Sens.
18. D Troy Vance (6.5C)
Team: Victoriaville (QMJHL)
Stats: 57GP, 4G-20A-24P, +17, 45PIM
Drafted: 2011: 5th Round, 148th Overall
Vance was a Burkholder selection with the Vancouver Canucks last season, and Burkholder made sure he made a move to bring him East. Vance nicknamed the Monster Mash is a hard hitting hulking defenseman who showed he belongs in the QMJHL. A solid stay at homer and still continued show defensive progress, and needs a few more years of development before he heads to the OTHL.
19. RW Maxim Shalunov (7.0D)
Team: Chelyabinsk (MHL)
Stats: 48GP, 30G-30A-60P, Even, 60PIM
Drafted: 2011: 5th Round, 122nd Overall
Maxim Shalunov should of went higher in the OTHL Draft this past year due to his skill set, but the “Russian Factor” made him slip to the 5th Round. He plays a North American style game, and posses some solid hockey skills. He loves to play off wing, and crash the net like he did this season. His major improvement came along in two areas his shot has gotten better, along with his passing skills. Only major problem is he is looking to develop and become a bigger role in the KHL.
20. C Brody Sutter (6.5C)
Team: Lethbridge (WHL)
Stats: 65GP, 30G-30A-60GP, -17, 49PIM
Drafted: 2011: 7th Round, 194th Overall
Sutter comes from rich NHL bloodlines of the Sutter family. He is the son of Duane Sutter. He came out of no-where this season as an over-ager and ended up leading Lethbridge in scoring. During his draft year a couple years ago he had shoulder problems which caused him to be past up in the draft process. This past season the Senators took a chance on the name, and it payed off. If he shows a similar type of progression expect him to soar up a few spots on the Senators prospect list.
3. C Ryan Strome (8.0C)
Team: Niagara (OHL)
Stats: 46GP, 30G-38A-68P, +37, 47PIM

Stats: 54GP, 18G-19A-37P, +12, 52PIM
Drafted: 2009: 2nd Round, 33rd Overall
Panik has had a good rookie season in the AHL. Currently 4th in team scoring for the Norfolk Admirals. He still is getting used to the North American style and it shows this kid has the size, and speed, and the offensive consistency to be a top six forward.
