2012 Senators Draft Review

The Ottawa Senators had a whopping eighteen picks to start the Neil Burkholder’s first official season at the helm of the Senators. Here is the player by player selection and analysis:

Alex Galchenyuk (Center)
System: OHL – Sarnia
Drafted: 1st Round -3rd Overall Pick
DOB: 2/2/94
Height: 6’1”, Weight: 185lbs
Stats: 2GP, 0G-0A-0P, 0PIM, Even
Playoff Stats: 6GP, 2G-2A-4P

Analysis
Galchenyuk was one of the most hyped prospect since early last year after his tremendous rookie campaign and many thought he could have been the number one pick this year if he stayed healthy. He is a big offensive threat shooting and a slick passer. He had a knee injury at the beginning of the year which caused Alex too lose most of his developmental year which caused concern for some teams. He came back strong and returned in the playoffs where he scored four points in six games. He does need some work on his skating, and if he can add more strength and become more physical he can be a star in the OTHL

Future

If he didn’t miss last year he could have been a roster player, but due to his injury last season he lost a year in developmental so he is most likely to spend one more season in Sarnia before making the jump. He is projected to be a top line scoring center

Malcolm Subban (Goalie)

System: OHL – Belleville
Drafted: 1st Round – 17th Overall Pick
DOB: 12/21/93
Height: 6’0”, Weight: 178lbs
Stats: 39 GP, 2258MP, 25W-14L-0T, .923%

Analysis

Subban is a hybrid-butterfly goalie who is super competitive and has a good pedigree being in the Subban family. Malcolm had a very good season and went 12 for 12 in shoot outs and he really put Belleville on his back and took them to the playoffs. He still needs some time to develop and hone in on his technical skills which is the real cause of concern for Malcolm.

Future
Rumors before the draft had Malcolm Subban was part of a deal to bring Marian Gaborik to Ottawa but the deal was put on hold for Marian’s one year no movement clause will be gone. As for Malcolm he will return to Belleville for another year. Malcolm is projected to be a steady starter at the next stage.

Matt Finn (Defense)

System: OHL - Guelph
Drafted: 1st Round – 24th Overall Pick
DOB: 2/24/94
Height: 6’0”, Weight: 197
Stats: 61GP, 10G-38A-48P, 58PIM, -13
Playoff Stats: 6GP, 0G-2A-2P

Analysis
Finn is a solid two way defender who anchored Guelph this past season. He is good in his own end and really excels in passing and setting up his offensive team mates. His defense isn’t bad by any means but does needs some more seasoning to become a impact player at the next stage. He has great character and already wears the “A” for the Storm.

Future

Like Subban he was part of the deal to bring in Marian Gaborik and will be traded once his No Movement clause is up. As for Finn playing wise will be staying in Guelph for the next upcoming season. Finn is projected to be a steady two way defender.

Coda Gordon (Left Wing)

System: WHL – Swift Current
Drafted: 5th Round – 124th Overall Pick
DOB: 8/4/94
Height: 6’1”, Weight: 179
Stats: 66GP, 30G-23A-53P, 12PIM, +2

Analysis
Coda Gordon is a pure scoring type prospect some scouts thought he was one of if not the most pure scoring players in this draft. He started out super-hot start but then eventually cooled down. He finished the year second in team scoring only behind 20 year old Taylor Vause. He has a great motor and could be this years mid round gem. He does need to add some more mass to round out his tall frame, and his defense needs to be touched on.

Future

Coda had a serious injury when he was younger and has rebounded which has added adversity to this young man. If he spends some time in the weight room, and continues to develop his two way game he should be a top nine or even top six forward in the OTHL.

Connor Brown (Right Wing)

System: OHL - Erie
Drafted: 5th Round – 125th Overall Pick
DOB: 1/14/94
Height: 5’11, Weight: 170
Stats: 68GP, 25G-28A-53P, 14PIM, -72

Analysis
One stat that is startling is the minus seventy-two no it wasn’t a typo. Let’s be honest though that isn’t all his fault. Erie was arguably the worst team in the CHL last year. As for the play Connor lead the team in goals, assist, and points as a rookie. He is a jack of all trades offensive player with playmaking and scoring. He needs work on his skating and if he adds some weight he could be a effective in the OTHL.

Future
He will return to Erie and play and his play should increase with the Erie’s first round pick Connor McDavid. That will be a test for Brown to see if he can keep up with a potential first overall pick in a couple years in McDavid. Brown is projected to be a fringe top nine forward.

Logan Nelson (Center)
System: WHL - Victoria
Drafted: 5th Round – 127th Overall Pick
DOB: 9/9/93
Height: 6’1”, Weight: 178
Stats: 71GP, 23G-39A-62P, 70 PIMS, -2
Playoff Stats: 4GP, 0G-4A-4P

Analysis

Nelson had a very successful rookie season for the Royals. He ended the season 2nd in team scoring behind Jamie Crooks. Nelson doesn’t do anything that wows you or spectacular but doesn’t have any major weaknesses either. He does play with and edge and isn’t afraid to get dirty which is why he has inflated PIM numbers. He does need to keep working on getting more mass to make it to the next stage.

Future
He will be spending at least the next couple seasons in Victoria before getting a contract he still has a ways to go on developing and honing in on his skills with top competition. He is the front runner now to be the top line center in Victoria this upcoming season. He should be a checking forward at the next stage.

Austin Wuthrich (Right Wing)
System: CCHA – Notre Dame
Drafted: 5th Round – 128th Overall Pick
DOB: 8/11/93
Height: 6’2”, Weight: 185
Stats: 36GP, 7G-10A-17P, 34PIM

Analysis
It wouldn’t be a draft where the Ottawa Senators didn’t take a collegian player . Austin went undrafted last year after playing for the USNDT. This past season in Notre Dame he showed he has some offensive potential. With his success he saw some more playing time which is really impressive because of the group of forwards that the Irish have in their system.

Future

He should be staying in South Bend for a little while, he has all the physical tools to make it in the OTHL but he needs to work on his all-around game and with a system like Notre Dame it wouldn’t be suprising to see him lacing it up in the OTHL in the next several years.

Francis Beauvillier (Center / Left Wing)
System: QMJHL - Rimouski
Drafted: 5th Round – 129th Overall Pick
DOB: 10/22/93
Height: 6’1”, Weight: 176th
Stats: 67GP, 23G-11A-34P, 75PIM, -11
Playoff Stats: 21GP, 5G-4A-9P

Analysis
Beauvillier was arguably the fasted and smoothest player in this years draft class. Beauvillier is a project player and needs to work on his offensive skills but he has serious OTHL potential. If he can combine his skating with a scoring touch watch out.

Future
He will be staying in Rimouski and will be one of the leading players for Rimouski next season.

Nicholas Walters (Defense)
System: WHL – Everett
Drafted: 5th Round – 140th Overall Pick
DOB: 4/11/94
Height: 6’2”, Weight:187
Stats: 62GP, 6G-12A-18P, 95PIM, -27
Playoff Stats: 1GP, 0G-0A-0P

Analysis
Walters is a high motor player and likes to be involved in the game at all times if its throwing his weight around, or fighting, or is in his natural habitat in his own zone. He is defensive minded and can be a solid number three to number six shut down defenseman. He still needs to add a little bit more muscle mass along with his shot to be a legitmate threat down the road.

Future

Walters is a long term project player who is expected to play for Everett for the next two seasons before making the jump to pro.

Loic Leduc (Defense)

System: QMJHL – Cape Breton
Drafted: 5th Round – 149th Overall Pick
DOB: 6/14/94
Height: 6’6”, Weight: 190
Stats: 65GP, 2G-8A-10P, 99PIM, -13

Analysis
Leduc is a mammoth defenseman and his strictly a stay at home defenseman who can and who loves to drop the gloves and inflict damage on opposing teams. His major problem is he has zero offensive upside and he is very light. If he can add some weight he can become a very good shut down defenseman.

Future

Needs development and is probably three years away of making it to the OTHL as a third pairing defenseman.

Doyle Somerby (Defense)
System: High School – Kimball Union Academy
Drafted 6th Round – 159th Overall Pick
DOB: 6/4/94
Height: 6’5”, Weight: 220
Stats: 31GP, 1G-15A-16P, 26PIM

Analysis
Somerby is the second 6’5+ defenseman the Senators took in the 2012 draft. The junior has a OTHL body already as still has to go for his senior season for Kimball Union. He is a long term project but should be shut down defender with some offensive flair.

Future
He has a long ways to go before he plays in the OTHL. He still has one more year to go before he heads off to Boston University. BU has a nice college program which bodes well for Doyle’s development.

Erik Nystrom (Left Wing)

System: SEL - Modo
Drafted 6th Round – 162nd Overall Pick
DOB: 10/30/93
Height: 5’11”, Weight: 176
Stats: 19GP, 0G-2A-2P

Analysis

It was known after the draft that the Senators scouting staff was overseas to look at Henrik Samuelsson with one of their later first round picks, but the one who the staff fell in love with was Erik Nystrom. Nystrom is a smooth skating winger. He is a solid team player and spent time in the SEL and Sweden Juniors. He needs to work the boards better before he can become a solid OTHL contributor.

Future
He will be fighting for a spot to play on Modo full time next season.

Francois Tremblay (Goalie)

System: QMJHL – Val d’Or
Drafted 6th Round – 167th Overall Pick
DOB: 8/29/94
Height: 6’1”, Weight: 193
Stats: 57GP, 3118MP, 22W-28L-4T, .862%

Analysis
The numbers suggest that Tremblay was bad, but you have to put in perspective that Val d’Or offense and defense wasn’t the greatest and part of that was why Francois numbers took a dive. With Val d’Or going to get better next season will make Francois one of the more important parts if Val d’Or is going to be a Memorial Cup team.

Future
Should be a spot starter in the OTHL, and will need to develop for the next two-three years before being able to show dividends to Ottawa.

Samuel Fejes (Left Wing)
System: High School – Shattuck St. Marys
Drafted 6th Round – 171st Overall Pick
DOB: 5/31/94
Height: 6’1”, Weight: 190
Stats: 55GP, 38G-40A-78P, 20PIM

Analysis

Fejes lead Shattuck St. Marys in goals with 38. He has good outside speed, and loves to dive to the net and make a spectacular goal. He is also physical and loves to throw his body around. He is still raw like many high schoolers. He could be a steal if he develops as expected.

Future
Sam Fejes has signed on to play with Colorado College next season.

Clark Seymour (Defense)

System: OHL - Peterborough
Drafted 6th Round – 174th Overall Pick
DOB: 5/18/93
Height: 6’3” Weight: 185
Stats: 47GP, 0G-8A-8P, 96PIM, -4

Analysis

Seymour has a pro ready skill set and body and is most likely one of the more safest big man defenders that the Ottawa Senators selected this season. He is another punishing stay at homer. Offense he is limited , but other concerns are just basic ones with adding more weight, and better decision making skills.

Future

He will spend next year in Peterborough.

Brady Austin (Defense)
System: OHL - Belleville
Drafted 7th Round – 186th Overall Pick
DOB: 6/16/93
Height: 6’4” Weight: 220
Stats: 68GP, 6G-20A-26P, 59PIM, -1

Analysis
Austin is another tall but mean defenseman prospect that the Senators selected this past season. For a big defenseman he has really nice skating. He is very aggressive and throws his body around a lot and doesn’t stop. He has a high motor and can bring some offensive pop as well. He needs to work on his speed and that will ultimately be his biggest question.

Future
This is his last season in the CHL and he will be watched closely to see if he deserves a contract to join Binghampton, or head into the AHL for more seasoning.

Simon Fernholm (Defense)
System: Sweden Jr. – Huddinge Jr
Drafted 7th Round – 188th Overall Pick
DOB: 3/6/94
Height: 6’4”, Weight: 187
Stats 47GP, 3G-12A-15P, 12PIM

Analysis
Intriguing pick by selecting defenseman Simon Fernholm. Fernholm his mobile, smart hockey player, and makes the simple play but smart play. Sometimes he looks effortless out there as he plays. He has some offensive flair but is somewhat limited offensively.

Future
He is scheduled to play for Frolunda next year where he will most likely make the jump and plays some SEL games which will show how he can compete against grown men.

Jaynen Rissling (Defense)
System: WHL - Calgary
Drafted 7th Round – 189th Overall Pick
DOB: 9/21/93
Height: 6’4”, Weight: 222lbs
Stats: 55GP, 5G-18A-23P, 124PIM, +9
Playoff Stats: 5GP, 0G-0A-0P

Analysis
The hulking defenseman who lead the Hitman in PIMS last season. He is overly physical which makes him a scary high risk high reward type prospect. He does have some offensive upside, and he loves to fight, dropping the gloves ten times this past season. As for the flaws the major one is his speed. He isn’t overly fast which hasn’t been a problem for him in the CHL but when he turns pro that will be the question if he can keep up.

Future
He will be staying Calgary for the upcoming season and he will be one of their major pieces for the Hitmen.
