2012-13 Senators Opening Night Program

2012-13 Ottawa Senators

General Manager
Neil Burkholder
Hometown: Detroit, Michigan (USA)
Record: 141-88-17 (.570%)

Analysis
Burkholder is entering his first full year as General Manager for the Ottawa Senators after leaving from a successful tenure in Vancouver. This off-season Burkholder has spent a lot of time and assets on building his offense and is arguably one of the deepest in the league. He has spent his time by swinging massive trades, signing one of the biggest free agents in team history, and making an impact in the 2012 OTHL Entry Draft.

Head Coach
Ron Wilson
Hometown: Windsor, Ontario (CAN)
Record: 126-100-20 (.510%)

Analysis
Coach Wilson heads into his fourth season behind the bench for the Senators boasting a tremendous record. With one year left on his contract and the pressure he has on his shoulders to turn the ship around this is going to have to be his year. Last year the team was gutted and the talent, this year its recharged and looking towards a long playoff run.

Ottawa Senator’s Roster

#2 D Radek Martinek
Hometown: Havlicko Brod, Czechoslovakia
Vitals: 6’2”, 210lbs, 36 Years Old
Last Year Stats: 73GP, 0G-5A-5P, -11, 51PIM’s (Senators)
Acquired: 2011 – Free Agency

Analysis
Radek is entering his second season with the Senators, he will bring valuable leadership to the team and is a very capable #5-#6 defenseman for the Senators this upcoming season. The club is hoping he will use his weight a little bit more and really start using his size to his advantage

#4 C Vincent Lecavalier (Assistant Captain)
Hometown: Ile Bizard, Quebec (CAN),
Vitals: 6’4”, 208lbs, 32 Years Old
Last Year’s Stats: 74GP, 35G-35A-70P, -9, 142PIM (Kings)
Acquired: 2012 – Free Agency

Analysis
This offseason the Ottawa Senators signed the biggest name free agent in team history after picking up former first overall pick in Vinny Lecavalier. He’ll serve as one of the teams assistant captains this upcoming year, and the highly skilled center man is going to be a integral part to the team for many years to come.

#6 D Ron Hainsey
Hometown: Bolton, Connecticut (USA)
Vitals: 6’3”, 211lbs, 31 Years Old
Last Year’s Stats: 82GP, 0G-14A-14P, -1, 29PIM (Flames/Penguins)
Acquired: 2012 Trade – Calgary Flames

Analysis
Ron Hainsey is a steady veteran defender who is a true ironman on the ice and hasn’t missed a game in over four years. He was brought in with a deal with the Flames to add depth to defensive rotation and is one of the most defensively sound defenseman in the OTHL.

#7 LW Andrew Cogliano
Hometown: Toronto, Ontario (CAN)
Vitals: 5’10”, 185lbs, 25 Years Old
Last Year’s Stats: 82GP, 15G-22A-37P, -10, 46PIM
Acquired: 2012 Trade – Calgary Flames

Analysis
Cogliano is a young solid two way forward who is versitale. He will play on the Senators fourth line and be part of a very effective gritty defensive line with Vladamir Sobotka, and Marcus Johansson. He will be a key depth player for the Senators this year and beyond.

#8 D Nicklas Grossman
Hometown: Stockholm, Sweden (SWE)
Vitals: 6’4”, 230lbs, 27 Years Old
Last Year’s Stats: 82GP, 2G-13A-15P, -3, 62PIM (Devils)

Analysis
Grossman begins his career in Ottawa and is expected to make an impact on power play’s, and being a bull in a china shop type of player. He brings a physical force, and good defensive play. That being said and just entering his prime, don’t be surprised if this is a coming out of sorts for Grossman.

#10 RW Marian Gaborik (Assistant Captain)
Hometown: Trencin, Slovakia (SLV)
Vitals: 6’1”, 204lbs, 30 Years Old
Last Year’s Stats: 75GP, 33G-35A-68P, -6, 36PIM (Kings)
Acquired: 2012 Trade – Los Angeles Kiings

Analysis
Gaborik was named assistant captain by his peers because he leads by an example. Very few players can score like Gaborik can. He carries a lethal shot, and with past chemistry made with former King’s teammates Michael Ryder and Vincent Lecavalier expect him to have a noisy season in the Nation’s Capital.

#12 LW Chuck Kobasew
Hometown: Vancouver, British Columbia (CAN)
Vitals: 6’0”, 192lbs, 30 Years Old
Last Year’s Stats: 82GP, 6G-10A-16P, -9, 20PIM (Predators)
Acquired: 2012 – Free Agency

Analysis
Kobasew signed on as a free agent and is expected get some playing time in case of injury on the left wing side. Kobasew carries a leadership quality that rivals very few on the team. Kobasew is going to be a mentor to some of the younger Senators, and every team normally has a guy who can step up incase of injury and that’s what Kobasew can do.

#17 C Vladamir Sobotka
Hometown: Trebic, Czech Republic (CZR)
Vitals: 5’10”, 198lbs, 25 Years Old
Last Year’s Stats: 81GP, 18G-29A-47P, +6, 65PIM (Senators)
Acquired: 2010 Trade – Anaheim Ducks

Analysis
Sobotka is coming off a career season scoring close to 50 points. He is a very steady two way centerman who can check, pass, and defend. His scoring has been questioned but with 18 goals last season, it has to be noted he’ll wreak havoc being on the Senators fourth line this upcoming season.

#18 RW Nathan Horton
Hometown: Welland, Ontario (CAN)
Vitals: 6’2”, 229lbs, 27 Years Old
Last Year’s Stats: 81GP, 19G-31A-50P, -11, 88PIM (Rangers/Leafs)
Acquired: 2012 Trade – New York Rangers

Analysis
Horton is a highly skilled winger who the Senators picked back up from the New York Rangers just a few days ago. Horton is the second best scorer on the Senators right now. He controls the pucks, skates, well and can even make slick passes. His durability is a concern and many feel like the Senators will play him on the third line to start the season.

#20 RW Radek Dvorak
Hometown: Tabor, Czech Republic (CZR)
Vitals: 6’2”, 200lbs, 35 Years Old
Last Year’s Stats: 82GP, 7G-11A-18P, +11, 20PIM (Flyers)
Acquired: 2012 Trade – Philadelphia Flyers

Analysis
Dvorak was brought in because he plays a stellar defensive game. He and Marcus Johansson will take turns playing on the fourth line at the right side to battle it out to see who takes that roster spot. Dvorak brings in a ton of expiernce, and leadership and was is a solid asset to have.

#21 C Patrik Berglund
Hometown: Vesteras, Sweden (SWE)
Vitals: 6’4’, 215lbs, 24 Years Old
Last Year’s Stats: 21G-28A-49P, -2, 14PIM (Devils)
Acquired: 2012 Trade – New Jersey Devils

Analysis
Berglund was the corner piece that came back to Ottawa in the deal that sent Bobby Ryan to New Jersey. Berglund is a highly skilled two way forward who has a ton of potential to be a solid number two center, or ever a good number one center if need be. With the addition of talent around him, he could put up some real monster numbers.

#23 RW Kyle Okposo
Hometown: St. Paul, Minnesota (USA)
Vitals: 6’0”, 200lbs, 24 Years Old
Last Year’s Stats: 82GP, 11G-24A-35P, -1, 39PIM (Wings)
Acquired: 2012 Trade – Detroit Red Wings

Analysis
A highly touted prospect a few years ago has made his way to Ottawa. Okposo is skilled, and can play nasty at times. His potential is still very raw, and many believe he is still on the fast track to superstardom in the next few years. It’s hard to argue that when he is going to be playing with youngsters like Sam Gagner, and Patrik Berglund.

#24 LW Matt Read
Hometown: Ilderton, Ontario (CAN)
Vitals: 5’10”, 185lbs, 26 Years old
Last Year’s Stats: 39GP, 8G-18A-26P, +4, 2PIM (Devils)
Acquired: 2012 Trade – New Jersey Devils

Analysis
Read was the second major piece coming back from New Jersey. He brings a nice scoring touch, and can play in his own zone and won’t lose a step either. Older but played four years of college hockey, and really excelled in a short stint in New Jersey last season. He will play a major role for the Ottawa this season, and beyond.

#28 D Robyn Regehr (Captain)
Hometown: Recife, Brazil (BRZ)
Vitals: 6’3”, 226lbs, 32 Years Old
Last Year’s Stats: 65GP,0G-13A-13P, +7, 119PIM (Senators)
Acquired: 2011 Free Agency

Analysis
Not a surprise that Robyn Regehr was selected captain for the second straight season. Regehr has been one of the steadiest defenseman in the OTHL for close to a decade almost. He’ll again play a huge role in mentoring the youth of this team, along with his tremendous on ice ability.

#30 G Ray Emery
Hometown: Hamilton, Ontario (CAN)
Vitals: 6’1”, 203lbs, 30 Years Old
Last Year’s Stats: 4GP, 1W-1L-0T, 4.36 GAA, .875 SV% (Wings)
Acquired: 2012 Trade – Detroit Red Wings

Analysis
Coming into this off-season the one really glaring weak spot for the Senators was in net, since Tuukka Rask will get his first real opportunity to start. Rick DiPietro left due to free agency only left Dan LaCosta left for the team. In the Pre-Season the Sens picked up Emery. Emery has had starting expierence and will really help Tuukka Rask this upcoming season, and is a solid backup goalie option.

#32 D Toni Lydman
Hometown: Lahti, Finland (FIN)
Vitals: 6’1”, 202lbs, 35 Years Old
Last Year’s Stats: 86GP, 5G-28A-33P, +6, 113PIM (Bruins/Sharks)
Acquired: 2012 Free Agency

Analysis:
Lydman joined the Senators late in the summer, and was one of the last of the free agents to ink a deal. Lydman was arguably one of the best defenders on the market this summer and he decided to join the Senators. He brings anchoring the blueline and showing this pre-season he made be older, but he is still very effective.

#33 D Alex Goligoski
Hometown: Grand Rapids, Minnesota (USA)
Vitals: 5’11”, 181lb, 27 Years Old
Last Year’s Stats: 79GP, 8G-16A-24P, -8, 57PIM (Senators)
Acquired: 2004 Draft

Analysis
Goligoski is really starting to come into his own and one of the few Senators who have been brought through the system and stayed. Goligoski is the best offensive defenseman on the team. Just starting to come into his own, and has played hard every game since being a Senator. This year he will a more important role with the club, and will be accounted for it.

#40 G Tuukka Rask
Hometown: Savonlinna, Finland (FIN)
Vitals: 6’2”, 165lbs, 25 Years Old
Last Year’s Stats: 44GP, 17W-19L-4T, 2.67 GAA, .906 SV% (Senators)
Acquired: 2005 Draft

Analysis
Rask has been highly touted for the past seven years. For almost every season rumors have been he will get a chance to be the future between the pipes for the team. This year it is finally true and will be the number one starter. Rask has the talent to become one of the best goalies in the OTHL. Rask will gain some expierence from veteran Ray Emery which will only make him better.

#42 C Artem Anisimov
Hometown: Yaroslavl, Russia (RUS)
Vitals: 6’4”, 200lbs, 24 Years Old
Last Year’s Stats: 82GP, 10G-17A-27P, +2, 7PIM (Wings)
Acquired: 2012 Trade – Detroit Red Wings

Analysis
Anisimov is one of the most balanced players for the Senators this upcoming season. Anisimov is a jack of all trades type of forwards with his offensive ability basically untapped. Was really underlooked in the deal that brought him over from Detroit. He will be the X-Factor for the team going forward. He will be anchoring the third line of Matt Read and Nathan Horton.

#73 LW Michael Ryder
Hometown: Bonavista, Newfoundland (CAN)
Vitals: 6’0”, 192lbs, 32 Years Old
Last Year’s Stats: 76GP, 17G-26A-43P, +1. 21PIM (Kings)
Acquired: 2012 Trade – Los Angeles Kings

Analysis
Ryder is the third player to come over from Los Angeles this year. Ryder has an amazing scoring ability and line him up with Marain Gaborik, and Vinny Lecavalier for another season watch out. That line is set up to be very deadly, and in the pre-season Ryder looked strong dawning the Red and Crimson. Many experts believe he will be the MVP for the Senators.

#89 LW Sam Gagner
Hometown: London, Ontario (CAN)
Vitals: 5’10”, 191lbs, 23 Years Old
Last Year’s Stats:74GP, 7G-13A-20P, -11, 10PIM (Senators)
Acquired: 2007 Draft

Analysis
The versatile forward will play a major role for the club this season. Very young and still raw, but will begin to get more playing time playing on the second line with Patrik Berglund and Kyle Okposo. That line combo is the future of the Senators and if they play well bodes future is bright for the Senators.

#90 RW Marcus Johansson
Hometown: Landskrona, Sweden (SWE)
Vitals: 6’1”, 205lbs, 22 Years Old
Last Year’s Stats: 81GP, 7G-10A-17P, +1, 0PIM (Senators/Flames)
Acquired: 2011 Trade – Calgary Flames

Analysis
Johansson was traded from the Flames last seasons and really had a coming out last year. The young budding player had a good season, and many feel he gained a lot from last season and he will only get better. Johansson brings in that Swedish skill, and playmaking ability. This year he’ll play on the wing instead of center like he did last season.
