Senators Open Pre-Season With a Blowout of the Bruins

Boston, Massachusetts (CP) –

The Ottawa Senators opened up the pre-season on the road yesterday going against the Boston Bruins. The Bruins were going to be the test for the Senators since the team from Beantown was just one game away before making it to the Stanley Cup Finals before ultimately losing to the Carolina Hurricanes. Boston signed the biggest goalie fish in the market in Ilya Bryzgalov to a monster contract to be the man between the pipes, but if game one was any indication on how the season will go, they might of signed one of the worst contracts in OTHL history, because he was ran out of the game in early goings in the third period.

As for the Senators General Manager Neil Burkholder has completely retooled the club, by adding offensive firepower where only four of the twelve forwards wore the Maroon and Black last season. As for the Senators they are hoping that Tuukka Rask will be the main man since he has taken the reigns this upcoming season, but this pre-season expect a battle between Josh Tordjman who was acquired from the Oilers at the start of training camp with veteran goalie Dan LaCosta.

Now to the action that was at hand last night, the Ottawa Senators showed their offensive explosion by scoring seven goals. All by the recent additions this past season except wiley veteran Milan Hejduk who has been the rock that has kept the Senators together since he signed on the dotted line a few years ago. The night for the Senators looked bleak surprisingly when Bruins defenseman Alexander Edler hit Toni Lydman and knocked him off the puck with a 2 to 1 rush when Ray Whitney shot, and was deflected by Jason Spezza (1) to take a 1-0 lead thirty-seven seconds into the game.

The Senators finally got on the scoreboard when the Senators kept the puck in the Bruins zone for almost a minute and half with shots after shots before the Senators third line got the puck in by Matt Read (1G) at the 7:48 mark in the first period. The Senators took the lead at 10:12 mark by a lethal shot my Michael Ryder (1G), and about a minute later at 11:30 the Senators scored another one by yet again Michael Ryder (2G). At end of the first period the Senators took a commanding lead 3-1 depite being out-shot by the Bruins 14-13.

Second period started out exactly like the first with an early power play goal by the Bruins with Jeff Petry (1) at 1:37 mark. Both teams were slapping the puck for over the last fourteen minutes, but the Senators scored another goal by none other Michael Ryder (3G) to complete a hat trick at the 15:45 minute mark in the 2nd period. The second period wound down from there with the Senators leading 4-2 again being outshot by Bruins 12 to 11.

The third period we saw total domination by the Senators outshooting the B’s 12-5, and was attacking at will when Devin Setoguchi (1G) scored at the :41 mark in the third period. Six minutes later after continuous attacking the Senators scored again by a goal by Milan Hejduk (1G) at the 6:30 mark. The Bruins did show some light with two special teams goals with a power play, and a shorthanded goal by Jochen Hecht, but was too late to rally comeback. The Senators big splash in the free agent market Vincent Lecavalier (1G) scored to add insult to injury, and cruised away with 7-4 win.

“It’s preseason and we still have a lot of work to do, our special teams play needs to get better as three goals by the Bruins were due to power play goals, that you can understand but them scoring a short-handed goal is unacceptable. We had great scoring opportunities and we capitalize, with all the good plays we made, equally we made some really bad ones.”, said Coach Wilson

The Senators are now going to end up going against per-annual favorites Buffalo Sabres who are awaiting to take the Senators to task, and cool down the jets of the Sens.
