Senators Pull Off Blockbuster with Detroit

Ottawa, Ontario (CP) –

Just a few days over four years ago the Ottawa Senator’s signed the biggest free agent in franchise history to a five year deal worth 47 Million dollars. That player was none other Milan Hejduk. Entering the 2012 offseason meant Milan was on a expiring contract and he was able to be moveable since the contract is definally larger than his role at this given time. Many thought he would have been dealt at the Draft instead the Sen’s kept him into pre-season and many thought he was going to be on for the ride, late last night we realized he will not be joining the Senators this season as he was traded along with Devin Setoguchi to the Detroit Red Wings.

Devin Setoguchi was brought in before the draft in a deal with the Calgary Flames who is signed to a long term deal, and is a pure scoring winger who was penciled in to play on the Senators second line with Patrik Berglund, and Sam Gagner, and was having a ok pre-season thus far, and it was a major shocked that he was included in the trade since many teams asked about his services and management said he wasn’t for trade. Along with Setoguchi went a 1st round pick in the 2014 Draft, and a 2nd round draft pick in 2015.

In return the Ottawa Senators received very good dividends in the trade. The first major piece coming back to the Senators is former top ten draft pick Kyle Okposo. Who is 24 years old and scored 35 (11G-24A) points for the Wing s. He brings nice hands, and has a scoring touch, he is just developing and will be a long term piece for the Senators going forward.

The second major piece coming back to the Senators is another talented 24 year old in Artem Anisimov. The Russian can play Left Wing and Center who brings a very good two way ability. Last year he scored 27 (10G-17A) points for the Wings. Anisimov is going to play on third line along with Matt Read, and Marcus Johansson. Insiders say that Marcus Johansson will be moving over to the Left Wing spot, and Anisimov will play center which is going to be a scary third line that can play defense and net some goals.

Coming into the season the Senators had a unproven starting goalie in Tuukka Rask, and Dan LaCosta going to be the backup goalie. The Senators promised to upgrade that position and in this trade they did just that by bringing in a goalie to split time with Tuukka or be a reliable backup in Ray Emery. The veteran goalie lost favor with the Wings and is going to be a main player in Ottawa on a one year deal.

The true wildcard coming back is a highly touted prospect Emerson Etem who is ranked 21 overall prospect on HockeysFuture publication. Etem who is 20 years old and is a true speedster who has a knack for scoring. Etem scored a whopping 143 goals in his three years playing for the Medicine Hat Tigers in the WHL. He is playing his rookie season in the AHL where he has done ok scoring 7 points (6G-1A) in 20 games. He gets lost in the fold so far but to be fair it’s his rookie season. He should be fighting for a roster spot in the 2013-14 season.
